Georges Cuvier afirmó en su Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles des quadrupèdes (1812) que no existía el hombre fósil. Hasta ese momento se había discutido durante mucho tiempo sobre la existencia de las petrificaciones humanas. Pero el paleontólogo y anatomista francés demostró que tanto el Homo diluvii testis como otros ejemplares no eran restos óseos humanos fosilizados. Sin embargo, en la década de los años veinte, descubrimientos realizados en cavernas cuestionaron las tesis de Cuvier. En 1823 una noticia se añadió a esta polémica paleontológica: un hallazgo en el bosque de Fontainebleau que parecía ser un caballo y su jinete petrificados. Pronto hubo una gran afluencia de curiosos para observar el fenómeno, entre ellos pintores y científicos. El ejemplar fue llevado para su exhibición a París, en el Boulevard des Capucines, con gran éxito de público. El propio Cuvier, junto con químicos, geólogos y naturalistas, participó en la controversia científica, que incluyó el análisis de muestras del objeto realizado por la Academia de Ciencias de París.
