Um representante do estilo de pensamento científico “compreensivo,” William Bateson (1861--1926): ciência, política e arte (2012)

unapi

The English naturalist William Bateson (1861-1926) whose name is associated to the development of the Mendelian research program introduced Mendel's work to the English spoken people. Using the tool style and the approach adopted by Jonathan Harwood in Styles of scientific thought in which he deals with the history of the German Genetics in the inter war period, this paper aims to show, mainly through the analysis of Bateson's correspondence, that he possessed several characteristics which were also present in the representatives of the comprehensive thought school, such as Alfred Kuhn. Due to this, he could be considered as adopting this kind of scientific thought. On the other hand, his North-American colleague, Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945) could be considered as adopting the pragmatic thought in a similar way as the German geneticist Erwin Baur. This paper will discuss several aspects of Bateson's view about science, specially biology, politics as well as his taste in arts that characterized his style of scientific thought. This study led to the conclusion that styles of scientific thought are closely related to the scientific praxis and its results.
