Gauss was primarily interested in comets because of the determination of their orbits. In his correspondence with Olbers, he also discussed the possible existence of repulsive forces, the nature of the cometary light, and the identity of comets during different appearances, the latter topic primarily on the basis of own observations. Gauss' publications dealt with the determination of cometary orbits, in which he especially pointed out Olbers' method. Gauss planned to publish his year-long studies in this field in a supplementary volume of the Theoria Motus, but the project did not materialize any more.
