Come Drive French North Africa: Cartographic and Guidebook Discourse in Michelin's 1929 Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie (2021)
En 1929, la compagnie Michelin publia son guide Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie pour célébrer le centenaire de l'arrivée des troupes françaises en Algérie et pour reconnaître les liens économiques et culturels entre la métropole et son empire africain. Cet article examine le discours cartographique du guide dans sa présentation d'une destination prête à accepter des automobilistes, un démographique prospère et croissant. Dans son guide, le premier à combiner les trois pays dans un seul manuel, Michelin présente un territoire français avec des instructions détaillées pour le traverser par des routes existantes. Michelin encourage également l'exploration des merveilles naturelles de la région par 26 excursions et leurs cartes simples. Cependant, c'est peut-être la “Nomenclature des villes” qui incarne mieux son but. Ici, Michelin fournit des classements utiles des hôtels et garages ainsi que des plans simples et clairs des 50 communes (grandes et petites). Ces plans guident le lecteur à travers un territoire inconnu et éliminent toute hésitation potentielle à traverser l'Afrique du Nord.
