Certamen artis ac naturae. Colours and Materials in Plinian Definition of Painting (Histoire Naturelle, livre 35) · The aim of this paper is to reconsider the definition of painting in terms of colours and materials as it appears in books 33 and 35 of Natural History, in order to highlight its connection to the main part of Pliny the Elder’s treatment of the history of the art of painting and of the famous, mostly Greeks painters in the Graeco-Roman world. In the second part, special emphasis is laid on other topics such as the “invention” of light and shades and the contrast between line and colour, which correspond to a set of criteria elaborated in the first Greek treaties about the history of the visual arts, dating back from the end of the fourth century and the third century bc, which are embedded in the Plinian narrative. To what extent and in which ways is the issue about colour and the distinctive palette of the famous painters inserted in the multi-layered definition of the art of painting that is outlined in Pliny’s chapters? More generally, can we find in the archaeological remains dating back from the 4th century bc to the 1st century ad a resonance of the colour palette used in the ancient masterpieces, which are irreparably lost?
