The commercial rise of England and its emergence as a colonial power were accompanied by growing participation of German merchants in Anglo-Atlantic commerce. This engagement took various forms. In the sixteenth century, German and English merchants interacted in commercial cities like Antwerp and Seville. After the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, German merchants formed a sizable segment of London’s trading community and engaged in various branches of Atlantic commerce. In addition, some German traders settled in the North American colonies and conducted business there. The article examines how these merchants navigated between the requirements of the Navigation Acts and the consumer needs of German immigrants in colonial America.
