[Abstract translated by DeepL Translator: This is the abstract in English… Between 1713 and 1714, a brief exchange of correspondence took place between Nicolas Malebranche, then considered the greatest philosopher in France, and Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan, a young and promising scholar, destined for a bright future as a popularizer of science. Dortous de Mairan admired the great Malebranche, whose thought skillfully combined Cartesianism and Christianity, rationalism and profession of faith, but he also read Spinoza's Ethica and was particularly impressed by the rigor of the arguments. He then asks his correspondent for a similarly rigorous refutation of Spinozism and, above all, argues at length for what he perceives as a dangerous proximity of the thought of the 'Christian' Malebranche to that of the 'atheist' Spinoza in the reference they both make to God's "extension," that is, the very essence of matter. Although reluctant to speak of a philosopher toward whom he feels only "aversion," Malebranche is finally compelled to speak out on time in order to defend his innovative rational theology from the accusation that it stands on the brink of the "precipice" of atheism and materialism.]
