Tra il 1713 e il 1714 si svolge un breve scambio epistolare tra Nicolas Malebranche, considerato allora il maggior filosofo di Francia, e Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan, giovane e promettente studioso, destinato a un brillante futuro di divulgatore scientifico. Dortous de Mairan ammira il grande Malebranche, il cui pensiero ha sapientemente coniugato cartesianismo e cristianesimo, razionalismo e professione di fede, ma ha anche letto l’Ethica di Spinoza, rimanendo particolarmente colpito dal rigore delle argomentazioni.
