A Certain Instrument for Seeing Far: Four Centuries of Styling the Telescope (2013)

unapi

This richly illustrated and well documented book is the result of a long and fruitful cooperation between the telescope collector Peter Louwman and the historian of science Huib Zuidervaart. On the basis of the Louwman Collection of Historic Telescopes in The Hague, one of the most complete collections of old telescopes and telescope-related documents in the world, the history of this instrument is outlined, from its emergence in 1608, until the end of the twentieth century. With its descriptions and almost 400 colour illustrations the book tells a fascinating story about historical telescopes, observational astronomy and the terrestrial, maritime, domestic and scholarly use of the early spyglass and the later reflecting and achromatic telescopes and their derivatives. This book not only throws new light on the historical development of the telescope, it also lets the reader enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the design of old telescopes. These instruments provide testimony of a far bygone period, in which the employment of attractive and costly materials made these instruments into genuine works of art.
