Volney’s Leçons d’histoire constitute a major moment in the critical confrontation between Enlightenment historiography and antiquity in the light of the revolutionary experience. They have often been presented as a manifesto of post-revolutionary scepticism towards history, which led its author to deny the usefulness of teaching such a subject in schools. This article proposes to consider Volney’s history course at the École normale not only as a contribution to the Enlightenment historiographical tradition and to the use of history in the early revolutionary years, but also in the light of other texts by the same author. Without denying the disenchantment towards historical knowledge which is clearly present in his Leçons, Volney’s constructive proposals also emerge, aimed at relaunching history as a cosmopolitan science capable of building bridges between civilisations apparently distant from each other.
