Identifying Superior Performance Factors Relevant to Australian University TTOs (2008)

unapi

Australian universities, like their counterparts in other developed economies, are are being encouraged to undertake greater efforts to commercialize their research results for a range of reasons, including improving the welfare of the community, stimulating economic performance, and creating the so-called third stream of funding. This article uses data from 13 university case studies1 to identify the factors that influence universities' performance in technology transfer and commercialization. It concludes that there are three principal factors that are essential for universities to achieve superior commercialization performance: long-term and consistent support for the commercialization function from the university government and its senior executives; TTO management that is commercially focused and experienced; and a university undertaking research with global commercial potential.
