Tourist maps (city maps, hiking maps, road maps) in the GDR were subject to various restrictions for security-related reasons. These included the concealment of the state border with the FRG and West Berlin, the camouflage of military objects or the depiction of industrial facilities as fictitious landscapes. After 1965, the scales of the topographic map base were also distorted. The article presents a number of examples which show how the manipulation was carried out. These aspects should always be considered when evaluating products which were originally intended for public consumption.
