Aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, l’exploration des fonctions cérébrales est prônée à la fois dans le cadre de la philosophie empiriste, plus spécialement lockéenne, et dans celui du programme cartésien. C’est ainsi que le cerveau acquiert son statut d’objet légitime pour une science nouvelle, qui serait une physique de l’esprit. Alors que la mise en œuvre effective de cette exploration était redoutable, les questions touchant la matière cérébrale étaient déjà débattues : la matérialité et la localisation des facultés, le rôle de l’âme, l’identité humaine, le parallélisme, la perception, la mémoire, la plasticité et la pathologie mentale. Le cerveau occupait désormais une place centrale dans la connaissance de l’homme et contribuait à la construction d’une anthropologie philosophique. Cet ouvrage donne un aperçu de la fécondité et de l’actualité de ces réflexions issues de grands médecins et philosophes de cette époque, tels Hooke, Locke, Diderot, Willis, Reid, Bonnet, Malacarne, Kant, E. Darwin, Cabanis et Gall.
