[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… Malaria was probably the leading infectious cause of death in human evolution. In Italy it has been a stable presence since the 2nd century BC. and, with the exception of imported cases, this disease stopped killing in 1948. The book reconstructs the challenges that the disease represented in different historical phases, describes its ecological characteristics, illustrates how malariologists - in particular Italians and among them Mario Coluzzi - have cooperated in the biological explanation and practical solution of health problems and clarifies why the control measures and the political-institutional organization of research and anti-malarial campaigns have been effective in Italy but not in sub-Saharan Africa. The volume also tells the historical story of malaria therapy - that is the use of malarial parasites to try to cure neurosyphilis and the experiments on human malaria carried out in this context -, the Italian contribution to the discovery of how a hereditary blood disease protects against malaria and some questionable international projects aimed not at curing but at immunizing the population in areas where malaria was endemic, implemented between the two world wars.]
