The article summarizes the research work on the medical records of the asylum Sant’Antonio abbot of Teramo and provides some insights on the use of the life stories of the patients in historical research. Some questions emerge analyzing nearly seven thousand personal files: a) the impact that military discipline and war have had on the lives of thousands of men; b) the consequences of emigration both on those who left and on those who remained; c) the vicissitudes of women hospitalized in a mental hospital during the years of the fascist regime; d) the survival of the asylum far beyond the fascist period and its subsequent destruction thanks to the Basaglia movement. The text invites the reader to reflect upon the value of medical records for historical research and on their capacity to tell not only the dynamics of internment but also the history of the twentieth century.
