Passfield, Robert W. (Author)
The St. Andrew's Caméré Curtain Bridge Dam was erected in 1907-1910 at the St. Andrew's Rapids on the Red River in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, by the federal department of public works. A novel type of moveable dam developed in France, the Red River structure was constructed on an unprecedentedly large scale and adapted to electrical power operation. When closed, the movable dam flooded out the rapids, thus deepening the river for navigational purposes; when opened, it provided a clear river channel for the passage of spring floodwaters and ice floes. River traffic passed through an adjacent canal lock; and road traffic passed over the budge dam. In 1990, the heritage value of the St. Andrew's Caméré Curtain Bridge Dam was assessed, and it was designated of "national historic and architectural significance" by the Canadian government on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
