A la fin du XIXe siècle - conséquence directe de la révolution industrielle -, la pollution s'attaque aux hommes, aux animaux, aux paysages. Pour lutter contre la suffocation, les vapeurs d'acide sulfurique, les pneumocoques, le bacille de Koch et autres microbes, les médecins hygiénistes inventent la microbiologie et promeuvent de grands travaux d'hygiène publique. Leur combat porte alors sur trois fronts : l'air, l'eau et les vecteurs microbiens.Ils seront les premiers écologistes ! Aujourd'hui, la pollution qui nous menace est autre. Moins spectaculaire, elle est peut-être plus dangereuse. La perception de ses effets n'est pas immédiate. Dans sa dimension planétaire, elle émousse les angoisses, frappe dans le long terme, dilue les responsabilités. Et pourtant elle s'inscrit dans le sillage de l'ancienne, les réponses apportées à celle-ci - ironie du sort ! - exacerbant parfois celle-là.C'est dire si la connaissance de la pollution microbienne du passé doit nous inciter à regarder les problèmes de notre planète d'un oeil plus lucide, à plus forte raison après la crise sanitaire mondiale due à la covid-19.
