Mario Biagioni (Author)
The anonymous Latin treatise entitled Theophrastus redivivus (written around 1659) is considered the first philosophical treatise on atheism in the early modern period. In his book, Gianluca Mori shows that its author was most likely to be the Parisian physician Guy Patin, together with his friends Gabriel Naudé and Pierre Gassendi. The analysis of the sources and the reconstruction of the genesis of the work shed light on a very lively cultural environment, demonstrating that modern atheism has much more extensive roots than historians have thought until now. In my opinion, however, a broader vision of the history of early modern unbelief should also include the sixteenth-century radical Reformation, especially religious rationalism. Historians have often neglected the sixteenth-century scepticism and rationalism, which on the contrary played an important role in the birth of modern atheism.
