Introdução O Professor Doutor António Germano Pina da Silva Leal foi uma figura preponderante na História da Cirurgia e Educação Médica em Portugal e na História das instituições a que pertenceu, a Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto e o Hospital de São João. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo homenagear o seu percurso e contributo. Material e Métodos A pesquisa bibliográfica teve como base os documentos consultados no Museu de História da Medicina “Maximiano Lemos”, na Biblioteca da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, no Arquivo da Reitoria Universidade do Porto e no Arquivo do Hospital de São João. Vários documentos pessoais e material fotográfico foram facultados pela filha, Mónica da Silva Leal. Realizaram-se entrevistas a familiares, amigos e colaboradores. Resultados Foi um Professor Universitário, Cirurgião e Clínico com um percurso admirável que se destaca sobretudo pelos cargos de liderança, nomeadamente na direção do Serviço de Cirurgia 1 do Hospital de São João. Apoiou e dedicou-se também de forma acérrima à investigação e à Educação Médica, com inúmeras publicações e orientações de trabalhos e com cargos de extrema importância, como o de Diretor da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. Discussão Como reflexo da qualidade do trabalho docente, científico e hospitalar, o Professor António da Silva Leal ocupou inúmeros outros cargos de importância nacional e até europeia como a Presidência da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia, a Vice-Presidência do Conselho Regional do Norte da Ordem dos Médicos e a representação de Portugal no Diretório da União de Médicos Especialistas da CEE. Os diversos cargos que ocupou em diferentes âmbitos, para além da sua atividade hospitalar e científica, refletem a sua entrega e dedicação às instituições, a sua capacidade de liderança e entre outras características que se prendem com a sua personalidade e que explicam como foi considerado um “Homem de Relação”. Alternate abstract: Introduction Professor António Germano Pina da Silva Leal was a prominent figure in the History of Surgery and Medical Education in Portugal as well as in the History of the institutions to which he belonged, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and the São João Hospital. This dissertation aims to pay tribute to his career and contribution. Material and Methods The bibliographical research was based on the documents consulted at the Museum of History of Medicine “Maximiano Lemos”, at the Library of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, at the Archive of the University of Porto Rectorate and at the Archive of São João Hospital. Several personal documents and photographic material were provided by his daughter, Mónica da Silva Leal. Interviews were held with family members, friends and collaborators. Results He was a University Professor, Surgeon and Clinician with an admirable career that stands out above all for his leadership positions, namely in the direction of the Surgery Service 1 of the São João Hospital. He also supported and dedicated himself fiercely to research and medical education, with numerous publications and work guidelines and with extremely important positions, such as that of Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. Discussion As a reflection of the quality of his teaching, scientific and hospital work, Professor António da Silva Leal held numerous other positions of national and even European importance, such as Presidency of the Portuguese Society of Surgery, Vice-Presidency of the Regional Council of the North of the Medical Association and representing Portugal in the Directory of the Union of Specialist Doctors of the EEC. The various positions he held in different areas, in addition to his hospital and scientific activities, reflect his commitment and dedication to institutions, his leadership ability, among other characteristics that are related to his personality that explain why he was considered a "Man of Relations". Conclusion In addition to his success as a University Professor and Surgeon, the life and career of Professor António da Silva Leal was marked by the defence of causes, institutions and values. He left a vast legacy to São João Hospital, to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and to Portuguese Medicine.
