Cet ouvrage propose une sélection de textes historiques qui posent les bases des conceptions actuelles dans plusieurs branches des mathématiques : géométrie différentielle (notion de variété différentielle, notion de connexion), topologie différentielle (lien entre courbure et topologie, utilisation systématique des revêtements, théorie de Morse), théorie globale des groupes de Lie. Plusieurs de ces textes constituent des classiques de l’histoire des mathématiques – parfois aussi de la physique – et n’étaient, à notre connaissance, pas disponibles au lecteur non germaniste. D’autres proposent un bilan provisoire d’un domaine de recherche – théorie des groupes de Lie (Schreier), topologie des variétés riemanniennes de courbure constante (Hopf) – et permettent de saisir une étape de son développement. Après une brève présentation, chaque texte est suivi d’un dossier documentaire.
