Né protoscienza né disciplina esclusivamente esoterica, l’alchimia si trovò al centro di un intricato dibattito di carattere scientifico, storico e filosofico di grande rilievo durante l’unico periodo per il quale la moderna storiografia non ha ancora elaborato studi approfonditi, quello successivo alla cosiddetta Rivoluzione Chimica del secondo Settecento. Per colmare tale lacuna, il volume è dedicato a una ricostruzione del pensiero alchemico dagli inizi dell’Ottocento ai giorni nostri, attraverso la disamina di casi esemplificativi che illustrano come la disciplina si sia conservata, sviluppata ed evoluta conformemente alla propria tradizione di riferimento e come diverse idee di alchimia si siano susseguite nel corso degli ultimi duecento anni.
