Margarida Tavares da Conceição (Author)
The Restauration War cycle (starting in 1640, recovering Portuguese sovereignty within the European war map) renewed the borders defence and gathered a large contingent of foreigner military engineers, mostly French. The discussion on methods of fortification and decision-making was made along with Portuguese politicians, military officers and technicians. For the evaluation of this process the performance of Luís Serrão Pimentel becomes relevant: as cosmographer and responsible for training a new generation of military engineers, aiming to create a Lusitanian method, somehow has rescued the Portuguese ability for action, sustaining it on an intercontinental scale.
