In the debate surrounding Anglo-Saxon scientific realism in the second half of the twentieth century, incommensurability at the semantic level in particular was discussed, since it was assumed that it encapsulated the other kinds of incommensurability, or at least that it was the one most likely to lead to an irrationalist, non-cumulative conception of change in science, by inducing conceptual relativism, which would be totally opposed to what realists maintain.
