Cicciola, Elisabetta (Author)
The difficulty in considering Freemasonry as an object of scientific research is closely related to its complex and multidisciplinary nature, as well as to its archives that were dispersed, sold and destroyed, especially under totalitarian regimes, or have simply been badly organised. Also the fact that Freemasonry is a private, but not a secret society, with rituals known only to its initiates, has contributed to casting an aura of mystery on Freemasonry and to demonising it. The aim of this article is to highlight the contribution of Freemasonry to the development of science and, in general, to scientific research, from its earliest links with the Royal Society to the 20th century. The values and history of this esoteric Order will be illustrated and references will be provided to the scientific topics that have characterised it. The role of prominent scientists belonging to masonic and masonic-link societies will also be analysed.
