Loving, David A. (Author)
Public health workers were among the first to address the negative consequences of urbanization and industrialization. Their actions in the 75 years between 1850 and 1925 reshaped urban life and public policy. Public health reform touched all areas of life from city cleanliness, to personal hygiene, to government, to education. Five major issues especially influenced the public health movement, and allow a comprehensive overview of the development of the field: vital statistics, quarantines, professional health boards, professional schools and organizations, and the movement for universal health care. Public health reform links the reform movements of the antebellum period, Gilded Age, and Progressive Era. It provided the foundation for changes that spread into all areas of life.
