In De anima ii II Aristotle offers two aporiai concerning the sense of touch. The first poses the question. 'How many senses of touch are there---just one, or many?' Let us call this the 'Counting Perplexity'. It is an interesting perplexity, but not as interesting, in my judgment, as the second one. The second perplexity raises the issue of whether flesh (sarv), and what in other animals is analogous to flesh, is the organ of touch. Let us call this the 'Organ Perplexity'. It is the one I shall discuss.
