The article discusses one of the most famous archeological discoveries of the first quarter of the twentieth century - the excavation of Hun (Hunnu) mounds in Noin-Ula in Mongolia. Seemingly accidental events led to this discovery, which in turn became enormously important for the Russian Academy of Sciences' development of the program for extensive studies of Mongolia, for the establishment of research directions and principles of cooperation between the Mongolian Scientific Committee and Russian researchers, and for the solving of a series of methodological and technical problems in the discipline of archeology.
