The article considers how kidney stones, gallstones, and bladder stones, taken together to be known as internal stones by the author, became an intersection of both religion and early modern medicine in Renaissance Italy. It considers how internal stones reflected both natural and supernatural belief systems of science and religion. Notable cases considered include the relics of Chiara of Montefalco, an Augustine abbess which included three gallstones, the heart stones found in the body of Blessed Margherita da Città di Castello, and the Venerable friar Raniero of Borgo di San Sepolcro whose three gallstones contained religious images.
