Spiritistiche Medien brauchten ein Kabinett, um die Materialisation von Geistern während Sitzungen vorzuzeigen. Da männliche und weibliche Medien ihre Kabinette unterschiedlich errichteten, wird hier behauptet, daß deren materiellen Eigenschaften mit den geschlechtlich differenzierten Medienauftritte verbunden sind. Im Falle eines weiblichen Mediums, funktionierte das Kabinett als Schauplatz rhetorischer Subversion von sozialen Normen, während das Medium verschiedene Subjektrollen verkörperte. Im Rahmen der Sitzung eigneten sich weibliche Medien gewöhnlich tabuisierte öffentliche Rollen an, indem sie männliche Geister vorzeigten oder aufführten. Dabei diente das Spiritismus-Kabinett, sowie die Verstorbenen dem von ihnen beraubten Publikum vorzustellen, als auch Frauen als soziale Akteure zu bemächtigen
