La réapparition de la peste au XIXe siècle salue l'avènement de la troisième pandémie. Elle rappelle le souvenir douloureux laissé par les deux, précédentes épidémies lesquelles avaient fait plusieurs dizaines de millions de victimes. A la différence des précédentes, cette nouvelle pandémie correspond à l'ère des grandes découvertes, tels que l'identification de la bactérie Yersinia pestis, celles des vecteurs de transmission ou encore l'utilisation des premiers traitements efficaces. Pareils progrès permettent de contrôler une maladie qui, profitant des perfectionnements des transports maritimes, se répand à travers la quasi-totalité de la planète. Aujourd'hui, la peste se maintient dans des niches écologiques dans de nombreux pays, réapparaissant, parfois à tel point, qu'elle est considérée comme une maladie réémergente, potentiellement dangereuse, et ceci d'autant plus que des souches résistantes à la plupart des antibiotiques ont été découvertes, et que l'agent de la peste est étudié en tant qu'arme bactériologique.
