Pendant la Guerre de Sécession, la chirurgie militaire est omniprésente et connaît un véritable essor. Il en va de même du journalisme militaire et de la photographie. Ces moyens médiatiques ont retranscrit l'épopée des plus grands chirurgiens et des hôpitaux totalement consacrés aux soins des blessés. La chirurgie dentaire et la chirurgie maxillo-faciale, alors balbutiantes, ne sont pas en reste, même si des carences organisationnelles, au sein des deux armées, apparaissent évidentes. De grandes personnalités se sont distinguées dans ces deux disciplines et ont laissé leur nom à la postérité.
