An unpublished edict : on the broadsheet banning Copernicus by Giacinto Petroni, master of the Sacred palace - The publication at Rome in 1616 of a ban on works defending the Copernican doctrine gave rise to a power struggle between two members of the Dominican order in key posts in the Roman bureaucracy controlling doctrine. Full light has been shed on this by the recent discovery, in the Archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, of an edict printed by the Master of the Sacred Palace, Giacinto Petroni, but of which publication was stopped by the Congregation of the Index. The Congregation of the Index ordered the publication of its own list of banned or suspended Copernican works, under the double signature of the Cardinal Prefect and of his Secretary Francesco Maddaleni Capiferro. The present study, largely based on unpublished documents, illustrates the conflict of precedent which had already opposed, during the preceding years, Petroni's and Capiferro's predecessors over the question of which would henceforth be entitled to publish lists of banned works. Independently of its doctrinal content, the publication of the decree of March 5, 1616, definitively confirmed the Congregation of the Index in its role as the institutional authority entrusted, in the name of the Roman authorities, with the future publication of bans on works.
