Describe how the explanatory model of neurasthenia in Taiwan during Japanese colonial period shifted from somatic and climate determinism to psychological model. Japanese psychiatrists emphasized the everyday reality and psychological difficulties experienced by the colonizers, especially those who possessed the highest of Japanese spirits and suggested that the colony life helped preserve Japanese morals, such as perseverance and perfectionism. In so doing they criticized the contemporary extravagance and indulgence introduced by modernization to Japan proper and demanded more investment of efforts and resources from the government to mitigate the hard life in the colony.
