The power of magic and the poverty of erudition: Magic in the universal library (1992)

Pages: 159-179
Publication date: 1992

Description “In the 17th century, some thinkers came to prefer reason and current experience to erudition and past authority, thus creating an epistemic divide that distinguishes the age of Ficino and his imitators from the time of Descartes and his followers ... This change can best be illustrated by comparing the critical works of Gabriel Naudé, a librarian who did not make the transition, with the philosophy of René Descartes, who made it most emphatically. Both Naudé and Descartes despised what the Renaissance called `the occult philosophy,' but they hated it in different ways and with different results.”
