Mathematics (2016)

unapi

The Greek tradition of pure mathematics is significantly distinct from the extant sciences as a whole. The latter, however, is strongly marked as a literary genre constituted by the use of diagram and reliance of a restricted, formulaic language, a genre stable throughout antiquity. While the rules of the genre are stable, it was pursued primarily in two relatively early networks: of the mid-fourth century BCE, and then in the late third century BCE. The two networks pursued different projects. Very briefly: the first network classified ratios; the second network measured figures. The emphasis on systems of classification marks the more philosophical context of the first network, while the isolated results of the second network mark a more self-contained group of practitioners, outdoing each other in their brilliance. The second network dominates the surviving Greek mathematical literature; the first network dominated ancient philosophical perceptions of mathematics.
