A tale of three telescopes: the John A. Brashear Company and its 46-cm objective (2019)

unapi

This is a history of a 46-cm objective lens used in three refracting telescopes. It was designed and figured by Charles S. Hastings and James B. McDowell respectively, employed by the John A. Brashear Company. In the past, its fabrication had been attributed to John A. Brashear alone. The lens, mounted in two different telescopes, had two periods of scientific use in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with Percival Lowell (1894-1895) and the Flower Observatory (1896-1954), respectively. On 1 July 2019, the lens began a third use in New Zealand.
