Il principialismo di Tom Beauchamp e James Childress è da oltre 40 anni il più diffuso e influente modello di giustificazione del giudizio bioetico a livello internazionale, e ha avuto il merito di fornire alla nascente bioetica una sorta di vocabolario minimo comune (il linguaggio dei princìpi), che si è rivelato utile in un contesto marcato da un forte pluralismo. Nonostante la sua notorietà, sull'approccio principialista incombono due rischi: da un lato, la banalizzazione, causata dalla ripetizione manualistica dei quattro princìpi e dalla loro applicazione meccanica; dall'altro, il fraintendimento, dovuto all'apprezzamento solo parziale della significativa parabola evolutiva del modello, specialmente nelle più recenti edizioni di Principles of Biomedical Ethics, l'opera in cui i due autori statunitensi hanno teorizzato e applicato il loro schema etico-normativo. Il presente studio si propone dunque di accompagnare il lettore nella comprensione del principialismo, attraverso un percorso che ne ricostruisce la genesi storico-culturale e la struttura teoretica, al fine di evidenziarne sia i punti di forza, sia alcuni seri problemi teorici ancora aperti. Una conoscenza approfondita dell'approccio appare infatti una premessa indispensabile per un rinnovato dibattito critico.
