Aquest llibre explica l’accés de les dones a l’art de curar des de l’Antiguitat fins a l’Època Contemporània. Amb una perspectiva polièdrica, l’autora analitza des dels coneixements empírics transmesos per via oral dins el si de cada família per part dels seus membres femenins fins a les especialitzacions reglades per l’Estat dins l’àmbit de la medicina. Entre els oficis antics relacionats amb el fet de guarir les persones, es detalla la feina de les remeieres i les sanadores. Entre les professions oficialment remunerades per les instàncies que representen el poder polític, es repassa l’accés de les dones a les carreres mèdiques i d’infermeria, sense oblidar les llevadores, presents a Occident des de temps molt remots.
