Nautical Technology (2014)

unapi

The chapter presents the nautical technology of Mediterranean ships from prehistory through to the modern period. The emphasis is on hull design and the steering and propulsion systems. The chapter addresses the following questions: was ship design the product of mere technological invention or the result of economic or political environments that induced technological solutions? How did nautical technology contribute to seafaring capabilities and to spatial and horizon shrinkage in the Mediterranean and beyond? What were the by-products of this evolution in nautical technology?
