Casi di riutilizzo di impianti idraulici sotterranei: le catacombe (2020)

unapi

The exploitation of complex water management systems, or simple drainage tunnels, present in the countryside for land drainage, or to collect rainwater, is widely documented at the origin of the development of numerous catacombs. The reuse of underground water channels and tunnels, for funerary purposes, by Christians, must indeed have seemed very advantageous. In large parts of catacombs in Rome, as well as in Lazio and Sicily, ancient disused cisterns, underground channels and shafts were reused, and their archaeological remains are still preserved. In some cases the interventions to transform the ancient, pre-existing water systems into cemetery tunnels involved changes that did not radically alter the original appearance of the underground chambers: arcosolia and simple burial recesses were dug into the walls, or, if necessary, wall supports were added. However, in most cases the tunnels themselves were widened and modified, to the extent that only faint traces of the original structure have remained. The fact that some underground chambers and tunnels owed their origin to water management systems was noted as of the earliest explorations of the catacombs, as of the 17th century. In more recent times, also in the light of new excavations, the topographical study of underground features, and an analysis of integrated contexts, has led to the identification of further examples of the reuse of underground features related to water supply and drainage, and to the formulation of suggestions as to how they may have appeared originally.
