Gli estratti da Oribasio nel continens di Rāzī (2019)

unapi

As is well known, Rāzī’s "Liber continens" is a collection of excerpts, in many cases from the Arabic translations of Greek medical works, beginning with Hippocrates and extending to late Alexandrian medicine. Among these excerpts, we also find Oribasius’s three works, the "Collectiones medicae," the "Synopsis," and the "Euporista." The present article aims to collect all these Arabic fragments (in an Italian translation provided by Ivan Garofalo and in the Latin version by Ferragut / Faraj ibn Sālim from the 1280s) combined with Oribasius’ original Greek where it survives and can be identified. This research shows that in a number of cases, these fragments from the Arabic are more extensive than in the Greek transmission, or even come from parts of the Collectiones no longer preserved in the original, but sometimes have parallels in other authors. It follows that these passages from the "Liber continens" are of major importance both for the philologist and the medical historian, even when they survive in Greek (usually in Greek manuscripts produced a number of centuries after the Arabic translation). The presentation in three colums – Italian translation of the Arabic text, Ferragut’s Latin version, and Greek (both Oribasius or, in his absence, other Greek parallels) – invites comparison; it highlights differences and opens prospects for further research.
