Environmental Racism and Violence in Rural Nova Scotia. (Film review) (April 2021)

unapi

Film Review: There's Something in the Water, 2019. Inspired by sociologist Ingrid Waldron’s 2018 book There’s Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities, this Elliot Page (listed as Ellen Page) and Ian Daniels documentary highlights the struggles of three communities in rural Nova Scotia through the lens of environmental racism. Situated in a local geography, these stories can be replicated across Canada and around the globe. There’s Something in the Water encourages its viewers to think more critically about the ways in which environmental harms have been disproportionally placed on the shoulders of non-white communities both past and present and with an eye to the future. Critical of industry and apathetic provincial political leaders, the film brings urgent attention to social justice, grassroots activism, and the cultural and environmental costs of development.
