Research into the history of logic flourished in Turin in the late 19th century, thanks to the studies carried out by Giovanni Vailati and Giovanni Vacca in their compilation of historical Note for the collection of texts entitled Formulario di Matematica, edited by Giuseppe Peano between 1894 and 1908. Ever since 1894, Vacca, who was a scholarly mathematician, a refined bibliophile and an expert in ancient and modern languages, examined the contributions made to ideographic languages by a great variety of authors, including G.W. Leibniz and some of his “precursors.” The paper illustrates Vacca’s work on the history of ancient, baroque and contemporary mathematical logic, and analyses the epistemological assumptions on which it was based. The reconstruction of Vacca’s activity in this field, as it emerges f rom his printed works, will be supplemented by an examination of notes, manuscripts and books with marginalia, now kept in Turin, in the Peano-Vacca archives.
