Tracing the Early History of Algebra: Testimonies on Diophantus in the Greek-Speaking World (4th–7th Century CE) (2019)

The transmission and reception of the mathesis carried by Diophantus' Arithmetica has not attracted much attention among historians of Greek mathematics, who have devoted their scholarly activity almost exclusively to questions about the proper understanding of the character of the mathematical undertaking of the Alexandrian mathematician. As a result, the common belief is that Diophantus' Arithmetica is presented as an isolated, and thus uncontextualized phenomenon in the history of ancient Greek mathematics. The aim of this paper is to investigate testimonies and other piece of evidence suggesting that Diophantus' heritage was present in intellectual milieus of the Greek-speaking world during the late antique and early medieval times. Special emphasis is given to a number of scholia to the arithmetical epigrams of the Palatine Anthology which witness the persistence of the method of problem solving taught by Diophantus in the late antique world. Η μετάδοση και πρόσληψη της διοφαντικής επιστήμης δεν έχουν αποτελέσει σημαντικό πεδίο ενασχόλησης των ιστορικών των αρχαίων ελληνικών μαθηματικών, οι οποίοι εστίασαν το ενδιαφέρον τους περισσότερο στην προσπάθεια ορθής κατανόησης του χαρακτήρα του μαθηματικού εγχειρήματος του Αλεξανδρινού μαθηματικού. Το γεγονός αυτό συνέβαλε ώστε να δημιουργηθεί η εντύπωση ότι τα Αριθμητικά είναι ένα ιδιάζον σημείο, μη αρμονικά ενταγμένο στην ιστορία των αρχαίων ελληνικών μαθηματικών. Σκοπός αυτής της μελέτης είναι να εξετάσει τεκμήρια και μαρτυρίες που υποδεικνύουν ότι στην ελληνική ύστερη αρχαιότητα και στους πρώιμους μέσους χρόνους υπήρχαν πνευματικοί κύκλοι οι οποίοι διατήρησαν ζωντανή την κληρονομιά του Διοφάντου. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται σε μερικά σχόλια στα αριθμητικά επιγράμματα της Παλατινής Ανθολογίας, δια των οποίων αποδεικνύεται ότι στην ύστερη αρχαιότητα εξακολουθούσε να ασκείται η μέθοδος επίλυσης προβλημάτων που δίδασκε ο Διόφαντος.
