This article focuses on a group of (semi-)rupestrian hermitages in the Stignano valley, in the Gargano area (northern Puglia), frequented probably since the late medieval period and up until the later modern era. The area in question is bounded by Castelpagano and S. Maria di Stignano. Here, several structures of a rupestrian nature, expanded by built masonry, can be interpreted as hermitages on the basis of written sources, and owing to the presence of details belonging to the religious sphere. As well as a description of the contexts identified, there are considerations regarding the construction techniques used to build the walled parts, and the water supply, which uses the cisterns that have been found, or else situated at ground level; there is also an initial examination of the documentary sources relating to the context. In one of the structures, an inscription records the local memory that Pope Celestine V passed through here. The work forms a basis for the development of new investigations of the area, and opens up lines of research, such as verification of the possible identification of two structures with ecclesie mentioned in medieval documents, and the possible devotional meaning of water collection basins for water that dripped down from the rocks.
