Urso, Anna Maria (Author)
During the Medieval centuries, the two short Galenic treatises entitled "De optima corporis nostri constitutione" and "De bono habitu" were translated both into Syriac and Arabic; their translations into Latin were made directly from Greek – and not from Arabic – between the end of the 13th century and the middle of the 14th both by Pietro of Abano and Niccolò of Reggio, who also duplicated other of Pietro’s translations. The coexistence of a Greek-Latin version of the same Galenic treatise is such an uncommon case, since translators aimed to complete the Galenic corpus by retranslating only those works whose previous translations (mainly those from Arabic into Latin) were considered inadequate. This prompts us to ask ourselves what is the difference between the two translations made by Pietro and Niccolò, that means understanding – if he really knew them – why and how Niccolò modified the translations made by his predecessor. The paper aims to answer this question examining the Greek models used by them and comparing systematically Niccolò’s and Pietro’s translations, in order to categorize their differences and to point out Niccolò’s skill in translating against Pietro’s unrefined renderings. The amount and the quality of these differences suggest that Niccolò did not confine himself to correcting Pietro’s translations of these two works, but that he did ex novo his own ones, using a different Greek manuscript and without any conservative purpose.
