Il rupestre e l'acqua nel monachesimo italo-greco. Elementi per una classificazione (2020)

Written documents and material remains attest, for Italo-Greek monasticism, to the association between water and rock-cut features, the latter in the sense of both natural cavities and man-made features. This article is designed to help understand whether it is possible to proceed to a classification of these contexts, distinguishing primarily between cases concerning the sacred sphere, and evidence for a secular context, with structures or systems designed for daily life or for the productive activities of the monks. Since we are dealing with Italo-Greek monastic contexts, a study of the remains must necessarily begin with Calabria, Italy’s Byzantine region par excellence. This region also features large stretches of mountainous terrain, although it appears the same could also be said of other regional contexts where this kind of monasticism was also present. As regards the sacred sphere, stress has recently been laid on the high symbolic value associated with cave-dwelling by Italo-Greek monasticism, apparently greater than is found in the Latin sphere. Churches are the features most present in rupestrian sacred contexts in the Italo-Greek world, where, among architectural elements, basins are often present, used to collect the water that naturally occurred in these places, and which was believed to have miraculous powers. Non-religious uses of water in rupestrian contexts include uses for the purposes of the monks’ work, for which structures and water supply systems were often dug into the rock. This involved production of a range of different products, enabling the monks to enjoy long periods of wealth and ease. In the case of larger communities, such as the Grottaferrata abbey, these had clear repercussions on site organization, and on the formulation of specific wealth management strategies. Another aspect to consider is topography, exploiting the close association between rupestrian contexts and water, in connection with sites that were simultanously both monastic and rural, and that seem to have begun from semi-permanent habitats.
