Ancient Greek and Roman bronze sculptures were elaborately coloured. The ancient literature informs us about both the aesthetic effect and – unfortunately only in part – the engineering of polychromy on bronze statues. Scientific investigations and archaeological experiments as well as a heightened understanding of the ancient texts on chemical formulations have recently improved our knowledge. The Frankfurt Polychromy Research Project has contributed to this endeavour since 2012. Its work encompasses the investigation of a bronze group in private ownership depicting a little boy torturing a cockerel, and above all the investigations and experiments related to the large bronzes from the Roman Quirinal Hill and the two bronze warriors from Riace. These efforts have provided insights not only into the sculptures’ original appearance, but also into the identities of the persons represented.
