Cincinnati and Boston bridge builder Thomas W. H. Moseley is given credit for inventing the American version of the tubular wrought-iron bowstring bridge in 1857. This article analyzes the methods used by Moseley to manufacture his bridge and to assemble it in the field. By examining existing bridges, Moseley's techniques are then compared to those used by levelander Zenas King in 1861 to produce his own tubular bowstring bridge. Conclusions are drawn on the economic importance of labor in the fabrication and erection of bridges. [1995 Norton Prize winner]
