[The "rediscovery of craftsmanship" and the "renaissance of the manual" is mainly based on Richard Sennett's attempt to take hold of the craftsmanship itself. The article therefore deals with Sennett's thesis of "craftsmanship", which he sees as a permanent basic human endeavor, "the desire to do a job well for its own sake". The article concludes with a plea for a historical analysis of craftsmanship and calls for Sennett's "powerful materialism" to be supplemented by a technical-historical perspective.
