In my research on the transmission of Latin and Greek technical-scientific texts during the Islamic Middle Ages, I found 13 Persian versions of Mechanics of Heron of Alexandria. Each of them is characterized by a number of interesting graphical and linguistic information, which allows to identify the period they date back, and – as a whole – suggests that Heron’s work was used as a reference ‘manual’ in the construction of machines for hoisting weights through small forces. In particular, one of these copies is notable for the exceptional calligraphy and refined paintings. Its elegant graphic is enriched by gilding and polychromies, full appreciation of which is unfortunately impeded by the poor state of preservation of the manuscript. Nastaliq calligraphy follows a visual ‘ponderatio’ that was obtained by handling the position and number of diacritical points, or by bending the graphemes to the disadvantage of correctness of the text itself, which consequently contains several distortions and errors. The table of contents of the book is written on the paper guard of the bound code, and leaves out an important short paragraph about the “perpetual movement”, increasing our interest for the code.
